Dr. James W. Cahill is a board certified, fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and reconstruction, with a private practice affiliated with Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. With over twenty years in practice, he serves as Director of Sports Medicine at St. Peter’s University and is a founding member of the Center for Joint Replacement at Hackensack. He routinely performs arthroscopic and joint replacement surgery of the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee, with particular interests in joint replacements, ligament repair, and the treatment of cartilage injuries. A recognized Castle Connolly and Inside Jersey Top Doctor, he trained at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed fellowships at The Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic Institute.

Dr. Cahill favors a non-operative approach whenever possible, turning to advanced reconstructive techniques when surgery is necessary to return patients to full activity. He emphasizes individualized, personalized care supported by a friendly and professional staff. As a competitive cyclist and former college football and track athlete, he brings a firsthand understanding of sports injuries and what it takes to help patients get back in the game.

Erik S. Contreras, MD

Fellowship Trained Shoulder, Elbow, & Sports Medicine Surgeon

Dr. Erik Contreras is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder and elbow surgery, sports medicine, and fracture care. He treats each patient as a whole, developing individualized treatment plans that begin with nonsurgical options whenever possible. He serves as a team physician for Saint Peter’s University Division I athletics, caring for high-level athletes across sports including baseball, basketball, soccer, and volleyball.

Dr. Contreras earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin and his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He completed his orthopedic residency at The Ohio State University, treating NCAA Division 1 athletes, followed by a shoulder and elbow fellowship at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital in New York City. A member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, he has published in leading orthopedic journals, presented at national and international meetings, and authored book chapters. Outside of practice, he enjoys time with his family, traveling, hiking, and trying new restaurants.

Dr. Jigar Gandhi is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon specializing in cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine conditions as well as orthopaedic extremity trauma. He uses minimally invasive techniques, including robotic-assisted surgery and intraoperative navigation, to provide precise, individualized care. Dr. Gandhi earned his Doctor of Pharmacy and medical degrees from Rutgers University and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He completed his residency at Cooper University Health Care, a Level I trauma center, and a combined orthopaedic and neurosurgical spine surgery fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston.
