Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet rich plasma therapy, commonly known as PRP, is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a concentrated preparation of the patient’s own blood to stimulate healing in injured or inflamed tissues. For patients dealing with tendon problems or soft tissue injuries, PRP offers a nonsurgical option that works with the body’s natural repair mechanisms.
PRP has been widely covered in the press, in large part because of its popularity among high-profile athletes recovering from orthopedic injuries. While the treatment has genuine clinical merit, it is not the best course of action for all injuries. Understanding what PRP can realistically accomplish, and whether it is right for your situation, requires a conversation with a qualified specialist.
As an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Cahill is among the most qualified physicians to evaluate whether PRP is appropriate for your injury and to administer the treatment safely. He stays current on the evolving research in this field and takes care to recommend PRP only when the evidence supports it as part of a sound treatment plan. Not every clinic offering PRP injections has the orthopedic background needed to make that determination accurately.
What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
Blood is made up of four components: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets are best known for their role in clotting, but they also carry proteins called growth factors that are critical to the body’s healing process.
To prepare a PRP injection, a small amount of the patient’s blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge, which spins it at high speed to separate and concentrate the platelets. The resulting plasma, rich in growth factors, is then injected precisely into the site of the patient’s injury. By delivering a much higher concentration of platelets than what circulates naturally in the bloodstream, PRP may meaningfully accelerate the healing process.
What Conditions Can PRP Help?
PRP research is an active and growing field, and Dr. Cahill monitors new developments to provide patients with the most current guidance available. PRP is not effective for every type of orthopedic injury, and some patients may need it in combination with other treatments.
PRP injections may be beneficial for conditions like:
- Tendon injuries or inflammation
- Tendonitis
- Arthritis
- Rotator cuff tears
Because PRP is far less invasive than surgery, it is understandably attractive to many patients. However, Dr. Cahill will only recommend it when he believes it is genuinely likely to help. If PRP is not the right choice for your condition, he will walk you through the alternatives and help you find a treatment path that gives you the best chance of a full recovery.
